What is a Water Softener?

A water softener is a whole-house filtration system. A water softener system is responsible for removing calcium and magnesium from your property’s water. The system accomplishes this through a process called ion exchange. If your residential or commercial property suffers from hard water, a water softener can help. Hard water can ultimately clog your pipes and decrease their water pressure.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

When water is in the ground, it picks up various soluble minerals, which can lead to contamination, making it unsafe to drink. Most of the time, the water collects magnesium and calcium, causing it to become “hard water.” While hard water won’t harm you if you drink it, the minerals affect the water’s usefulness. Soap doesn’t lather in hard water; in bad cases, calcium deposits are left on the insides of pipes. Water softeners remove magnesium and calcium through an ion exchange process, where excess calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged with sodium ions, leaving water softer and easier to use. The major work in the softening process occurs in a water softener’s mineral tank, where special negatively-charged beads attract positively charged calcium and magnesium ions to remove them from the water. These ions are replaced by sodium and potassium ions from a brine solution in a separate tank. This brine solution requires special water softener salt to keep the softener functioning.

Why Do You Need a Water Softener?

There are numerous reasons why home and business owners need a water softener. Not only can they make life a little more comfortable, but they can make your water better overall. A water softener removes mineral buildup from water, resulting in longer lifespans for water-using appliances, cleaner laundry, more efficient plumbing fixtures, lower energy bills, cleaner dishes, reduced greenhouse gases, better tasting water, better water flow, and no more hard water stains.

The Advantages of a Water Softener

Water softeners can provide home and business owners with a wide range of benefits and advantages to property owners without water softeners. Advantages of water softening include:

  • Prevents mineral buildup, known as scale
  • Helps keep the inside of pipes, fixtures, and hot water heaters clean
  • Increases the lifespan of some appliances
  • Reduces soapy films and detergent curds
  • Helps keep sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines clean
  • Prevents mineral spots on glassware

Some Common Water Softener Repairs

As with most appliances in your home, your water softener is subject to potential problems and may need to be repaired. The most common problem in water softeners is blockages, which can happen when salt and other minerals in the softener accumulate and form deposits in the filter screen and the brine line. These are easily fixed by homeowners with little help from professionals.

The resin beads in salt-based water softeners can sometimes become damaged and need to be replaced. These beads in the mineral tank can often last for as long as the softener itself, but they may need to be cleaned or replaced if you notice debris floating in softened water. This usually means that the beads are deteriorating. Your water softener should be reliable as long as you receive the proper maintenance and is filled with the right softener salt. Water softeners seem like simple machines, but you will notice if your softener isn’t working correctly and you are stuck with hard water.
