Buying and installing a new heating and air conditioning system is a considerable undertaking. Not only are new systems a significant expense, but the installation can be complex and time-consuming. With everything that is involved in buying and installing a new HVAC system for your home, you may be tempted and find it convenient to go to the nearest home improvement store to shop around and make your purchase.

That may sound like a quick solution to save money and obtain a new home heating and cooling system. However, there are some pitfalls to be aware as the home improvement store won’t be the ones installing the new system.

Installation and Long-Term Service Are Not a Primary Area of Focus

If you don’t know a whole lot about new, innovative HVAC systems, going to a home improvement store isn’t a bad idea. The salesperson will likely have some knowledge of new systems and you can view different brands, pricing, and styles.

But the home improvement or warehouse store’s focus is sales, not service. They’re just looking to move product and aren’t experts in HVAC systems and service. As part of the process to sell the system, they typically partner with an outside company to perform the installation and make additional profits off the install.

Service Deficiencies

A company that has partnered with a home improvement store for system installation, most likely won’t be on par with what you will find if you go with a company that specializes in HVAC service and repair. They likely won’t have the same kind of training and experienced technicians than that of a trusted HVAC company.

While there is technically nothing wrong with going to a big box store for an HVAC system, you are usually better off going with a trusted home heating and air conditioning company. Most of these companies offer a wide range of services, from initial installation to 24-hour repair.

They will also be able to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have, something that a salesperson responsible for several departments might not be able to offer.

Consider the Options

Buying an HVAC system from a home improvement store may be common, but it’s important to arm yourself with enough knowledge of heating and air conditioning systems and service before you begin shopping. You could end up with a system that wasn’t as expertly fitted into your home or business, and that could cost you more in the long run.
